Internet marketers cannot afford to ignore the power of social media sites such as Facebook and Twitter. There are many benefits to Twitter marketing, but it’s important that you don’t unwittingly make errors that can set you back.

When you start marketing on Twitter, you have to keep in mind your target market and who you’re dealing with. Sending your followers too many messages that are off topic will cause them to ignore you or stop following you. Sending too many tweets that have nothing to do with your targeted niche is a common mistake. This often happens because marketers want to build relationships with their followers, which is valid. Yet you should still keep most of your tweets relevant or you can lose your focus. It will be difficult for you to market products in your niche if too many of your tweets are on unrelated subjects. You don’t have to stick to your topic 100% of the time, and it’s good to mix it up with some random tweets.

The majority of your tweets, however, should have something to do with your own market. If your target market is herbal remedies, then the majority of your tweets should be telling your followers something about this topic. If you start to tweet about every other random thing you like, you’ll lose focus and also your followers.

Many new marketers make the Twitter mistake of not doing anything in the hopes that individuals will flock to them and become followers. It’s another thing if you’re Ashton Kutcher but if you’re not, then you’ll have to put in regular efforts to follow people in your niche so that they follow you back. You will likely find that when you become a follower of someone, they turn right around and become your follower. This is the first step you need to take with Twitter, as you’re just trying to get people to connect with you within the niche you’ve chosen. You will also want to follow as many experts within your field as you can so that they can potentially retweet your tweets, which will mean more people see them. That’s just how effective Twitter is for marketing. It’s a way to seek out prospects on your own, so that you don’t have to wait around for them to find you one way or another. Plus, when you go out and find them, you can be choosy about who you put on your contact list so that you don’t have just anyone on there.

Coming across like a corporate executive is another typical mistake made by Twitter marketers. They think and feel that this would make them look powerful and their target market would get impressed. Twitter members, however, don’t want to talk to corporate types, but to down to earth people they can relate to. This would also allow you to experience more freedom when you’re tweeting, since you can experiment with various types of content. Twitter users are there to communicate with interesting people, not corporations, so you don’t want to present yourself that way.

Overall, Twitter marketing is fairly straightforward as long as you approach it the right way and steer clear of the mistakes we’ve been discussing.
